There is still a lot to learn about COVID-19 and the lasting impacts the virus has on individuals. One long-term effect that is quickly making headlines is the development of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
Viruses, like COVID-19, are a common cause of POTS. Awareness of this syndrome is important so that you can recognize the symptoms early in yourself or a loved one. POTS patients frequently go years being misdiagnosed, but with increased awareness we can help shorten that time period and help people get on a treatment plan so they can get back to living their healthy, active lives.
POTS is a type of dysautonomia, or a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system regulates functions of your body that happen automatically, such as your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, and temperature control. Since this system regulates a large portion of the body’s functions, a variety of symptoms can be felt when it’s not working properly. Physical symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, fainting, chronic pain, headaches, abnormal sweating, shakiness, breathlessness, nausea, digestive disorders, vision issues and more.
If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms after recovering from COVID-19, please visit our Dysautonomia Program webpage for information on treatment and contact us to schedule a consultation.
