Case Study: Migraine: 40-Year-Old Female

A 40-year-old presented to CFNC with complaints of dizziness rated 10/10, uncontrollable migraines rated 10/10, and shortness of breath rated 10/10. She also had complaints of numbness in the face and limbs, feeling off balance, slurring of speech, and burning sensations.

Examination

The examination showed severely reduced balance, veering to the left while walking, difficulties with cerebellar testing on the left, irregular sensation on the face, and a drift of the eyes down and to the left in darkness.

Treatment

The patient was seen twice per week for six weeks. Treatment consisted of cerebellar therapies, balance, oculomotor therapy, peripheral nerve stimulation, red and near infrared light, electrical muscle stimulation, and supplements.

Results

At the re-examination, the patient reported a 50% improvement since beginning treatment. She has not had any slurring of speech, shortness of breath is not as frequent, and her migraines reduced in severity and she describes them as a headache instead of a migraine episode. Dizziness is now rated 5.5/10, and headaches (not migraines) are now a 5/10.

Conclusion

Functional neurology has been shown to be effective for a wide range of conditions including chronic debilitating migraines. Individualized rehabilitation is crucial to create positive neuroplasticity for patients. Every patient requires an individualized approach and targeted treatment to achieve optimal results.
